Damme Damme was once the outport of Brugge, and world famous as the birthplace of Tijl Uilenspiegel. The Brugse Ommeland stretches out behind the entire coastline until Bruges. This piece of green Flanders is an unequalled cyclists' paradise. A number of picturesque routes have been charted and signposted for cycling enthusiasts. While pedalling your two-wheeler you'll pass through many other peaceful polder villages such as Oostkerke, Hoeke, Lapscheure and Lissewege, where you can go and admire the largest barn in country. If you like expressionist art you should really spend a couple of hours visiting the Provinciaal Museum Constant Permeke in Jabbeke. The Permeke-route is a forty-five-kilometre long cycling route which takes you through Gistel, Jabbeke and Oudenburg, the three municipalities on the border of the fertile polders and the arid sandy region. Bikes & tandems can be rented through the hotel. - Transfer Information By car: Follow the canal Bruges to Damme (5 km) By bike: If you do not have your own bike you can rent one at "Bike and Scooter renting Popelier" Mariastraat 26, 8000 Bruges On foot: 5 km (one way) By boat: Departure at the beginning of the Napoleon Canal (Noorweegse Kaai 31). Organized Excursion Damme: A panoramic tour from Bruges by minibus combined with a boattrip to Damme. - Sights Damme, formerly an outer harbour to Bruges, is now a beautiful medieval market town, with nice historical buildings: the Town Hall, Church of our Lady's, the Old Hospital, several old houses. Damme is surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Imagine the tranquillity of the canals, bursting with life from the herons to the eel fishermen. Beautiful polders farmland dotted with windmills, castles, medieval fortifications, - Shops Damme has many shops with handicrafts, galleries bookshops (old books).
